ABOUT ME

SYDNEY FRODSHAM BSc Kin, R.Kin

My story began at the age of 14 when I discovered weightlifting. From the very first lift, I was hooked on the feeling of getting stronger and more capable. This newfound passion drove me to dive deeper into the world of fitness and the science of human movement. This curiosity for understanding how our bodies work led me to pursue a BSc Honors in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo.

I was determined to apply the science of human movement to help people find a sense of belonging and confidence. While working towards my degree, I couldn't wait to start making a difference. I became a strength and conditioning intern for the UW rugby team and an off-season coach for dragon boat team.

In university, I was one of the few women who felt confident training by myself in the gym. This self-assurance opened doors for me, including being recruited to the University of Waterloo Dragon Boat Team in 2019. That same year, our team qualified for an international competition in France! It was an exhilarating time, but it also highlighted some personal struggles.

Despite my achievements, I felt out of place because I didn't think I looked like the other athletes—lean and fit. I started tying my worthiness to my performance and appearance. This mindset led me to train excessively, dedicating 2-3 hours a session, five days a week, while adhering to a restrictive 1200-calorie diet. I cut out foods I enjoyed, and this led to bouts of binge eating later. I was known for my discipline and strength, but deep down, I feared losing these qualities.

It wasn't until the pandemic, when I lost access to a fully equipped gym, that I realized how out of control things had become. The anxiety around food and the pressure I put on myself took a toll. Through education, self-compassion, and a lot of trial and error with my training, I learned to love exercising again.

I rediscovered what it means to feel like an athlete and learned how to fuel my body without feeling restricted. Now, I enjoy my life fully, balancing my health with time spent with friends and family. My journey has taught me that true strength comes from within, and it's about more than just physical capability—it's about self-love, balance, and finding joy in the process.
